When I spoke with Julia about this, I asked her if she thought it was hard to write “about” climate change, and she said: I read about the novel in Michigan Daily, where writer Emily Yang spent the first paragraph talking about novels about climate change and the difficulty of writing about them. Disappearing Earth was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2019 and a national bestseller, among other accolades. It was a pleasure to chat with Julia Phillips about her debut novel Disappearing Earth, the first edition of which was published by Knopf in May 2019. This month’s spotlight goes to a country not showcased before in the world eco-fiction series: Russia, specifically the Kamchatka peninsula, which dips down from the far eastern coastline of the country and lies between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. Adam Kirsch, The Global Novel: Writing the World in the 21st Century The local gains dignity, and significance, insofar as it can be seen as a part of a worldwide phenomenon. Life lived here is experienced in its profound and often unsettling connections with life lived elsewhere, and everywhere. In this way, it is faithful to the way the global is actually lived–not through the abolition of place, but as a theme by which place is mediated. The global novel exists, not as a genre separated from and opposed to other kinds of fiction, but as a perspective that governs the interpretation of experience.

It's here that Frankie now finds herself working, having been suspended from school after another violent outburst, when she is contacted by Xavier claiming to be her half brother. She and aunt Vinnie live above Vinnie's kebab shop in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, with an eclectic mix of diversity and crime. Although she's always lived with the hurt of abandonment, Frankie is incredibly fierce and doesn't allow the failures of her mother to define her. It's an utterly enchanting blend of attitude, sass and an engaging storyline as told through the eyes of one of the most likable protagonists in young adult today. Frankie is without a doubt, the most compelling debut in young adult since Stolen by Lucy Christopher. I’ve been waiting an hour when the author pops up on Zoom, a boyish 62, tousle-haired and apologetic. But Hunting was even better, as well as lighter in tone. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the book.I read this because I had enjoyed Champion of the Rose. It didn't really make any sense even at the end. Their relationship was great. The only piece that didn't work for me was the mystery. Thornaster was interesting, a little too sure of himself, but willing to laugh at himself. more mart and competent without being perfect. Review 2: I loved, loved, loved this book.It was a nice blend of fantasy and romance. especially if this ends up as a lone title (not in a series). However, I wish it had been about 100 pages longer, to give more detail, flesh out characters and relationships further. WHY ISN'T THERE MORE? What happens to our characters? Where do they go next? I loved this story, I thought it was interesting and a nice fresh take on the genre. Review 1: My only complaint about Hunting is this.
